about

Real name / Marco Freivogel, Ingo Gansera

Exercise One is the boisterous mobilee duo that bustles with kinetic energy and thrives on the stage.

To DJs they are the crafters of cracking tracks on wax; to clubbers around the world they’re the live act that hurtle forwards like a runaway train. In their own words they are “driving a car named ‘Techno’ off a cliff, into the sea of endless possibilities.” Berlin-based Marco Freivogel and Ingo Gansera were both seasoned musicians before they met, and in a short time their respective backgrounds as live performers combined with the energy of Berlin to create an outfit with an abundance of creativity.

After working together behind the scenes for a record label, the pair began producing, experimenting and playing live gigs. This helped to forge their joint musical world-view – that production and live performance have a symbiotic relationship. This belief has guided Exercise One on their journey from underground sensations to Berlin heavyweights. The creation of their own label Lan Muzic in 2005 jump-started their careers when their first record, Kitchen Tools EP found its way into Anja Schneider’s DJ box. Schneider immediately signed the duo and within a year they had released their first 12” Steady Pulse, a raw take on minimal techno that set the stage for what was to come.

2006 saw the release of the acclaimed Debaya, which synthesized hypnotic and atmospheric bass-lines with the stripped-down sound synonymous with their name. Following releases Dark Star and Intensity, Exercise One finessed their debut album over a number of months. In Cars We Rust is the product of their hands-on approach, collaged and remixed into a varied yet cohesive whole. Clubbier material is rounded out by enveloping ambient tracks, soundtrack-ready synthesizer ballads, and retro-futurist electro-pop. The duo have crafted remixes for Sebo K and Shackleton, and further releases for Dumb-Unit and Wagon Repair, as well as their own imprint Exone. A testament to their studio and live efforts, both Exercise One’s dance-floor stormers and their introspective moments are guided by the same spirit and flow of improvisation that drives their live sets.

Exercise One have continued to refine their high-energy sets, perpetually adding, subtracting, and reorganizing the pieces of this unique mosaic. The duo made a landmark live appearance at Sonar music festival and shortly thereafter began a string of performances for distinguished festivals and venues such as Fabric, Panorama Bar and Fusion, plus worldwide tours, and numerous live shows as part of mobilee’s 5th anniversary tour. Whether performing on-stage or rehearsing and recording, music-making is a fundamentally live endeavor for Exercise One: the fortuitous result of painstaking preparation, communication and the willingness to go wherever the music leads them.

Exercise One will continue their migration through the hinterland of techno, fuelled by the vision, passion, and love of music that continues to drive the extended mobilee team in all that they do, and all that will come.
